Now, for all you doubters out there, past interns have gone on to paid work at jhr (six in total at quick count), to slog it out for the UN, to gallivant across Africa with top NGO’s, to tear it up in Canada’s non-profit sector and to win the Nobel Peace Prize. OK, maybe not the last one–yet!
Our formula is this:
1) Hire the best and brightest;
2) Give them a long-term project to work on for the duration of their internship, where they can show their true stuff;
3) Give them a series of short-term tasks across multipul departments of jhr, to give them a sense of all aspects of the organization;
4) Allow them to participate in most management meetings and encourage them to share their views;
5) Hire interns year round, not just during the summer. We hire in the the same cycles as University semesters: Fall, Winter and Summer;
6) Encourage them to stay beyond their inital internship period if they see fit;
7) Hire lots of them. At any given time we normally have about .75 interns to every Head Office staff member;
8 ) Treat them like full staff members–no coffee fetching or grunt work;
9) Make sure they have fun!
