Journalism Trainers

Position Summary:
jhr is seeking to hire a Journalism Trainer to work with jhr in Liberia for eight months. The trainer should have a specialty in either:
  • Newspaper (Print)
  • Television (and/or Multimedia)
  • Rural Radio
The Journalism Trainer’s work will vary, but he/she will be working primarily with jhr’s Liberian media partners to build the capacity of the Liberian media to report on human rights issues. The trainer will correspond often with the Country Director in Liberia who will manage their work. The exact location and organization placement will be determined upon hiring.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as trainer and mentor to journalists at a media house on behalf of jhr
  • Provide daily on-the-job training, conduct informal seminars for local journalists to increase focus on human rights reporting
  • Work one-on-one with local journalists to improve basic journalistic skills, including encouraging innovative reporting
  • Work closely with jhr’s Workshop Facilitator to run workshops for local editors/owners, journalism students, and community members
  • Capacity-building of local journalists and students
  • Create monthly blog postings and success stories for public engagement
  • Produce regular monthly reports providing feedback on the status and progression of the program
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders to produce a press kit
Skills/Experiences/Qualifications:
  • Journalism degree or relevant journalism experience
  • Strong working journalism experience of no less than 2 years
  • Strong knowledge of and commitment to human rights, or a demonstrated interest in human rights, including commitment to gender equality
  • Significant training, teaching, or educational experience preferred
  • Knowledge of, and interest in, media development
  • Knowledge of West Africa
  • International experience within a developing nation(s) preferred, or strong, demonstrable interest
  • Ability and willingness to live and work effectively and successfully in a cross-cultural environment
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a team environment, as well as independently
  • Proven skills in capacity-building of other staff and partners
  • Extremely self-motivated, and proven ability to manage and motivate others
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – excellent written and communication skills
  • Fluency in English is imperative

Workshop Facilitator

Position Summary:
The Workshop Facilitator will be working directly with various media partners and organizations in Monrovia, Liberia to conduct journalism training activities and workshops. He/she has strong knowledge of human rights and proven ability to successfully teach others. The facilitator will collaborate often with the Country Director on the workshop and training sessions. This position is based in Monrovia with frequent travel to rural areas. Flexibility is of utmost importance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop content and facilitate workshops for local journalists, editors, and owners on a variety of media, human rights, and governance topics
  • Develop content and facilitate workshops fro journalism students at post-secondary institutions in Monrovia
  • Develop content for and facilitate workshops for local journalists at community radio stations in rural Liberia
  • Collaborate with the Country Director to develop and expand the local Human Rights Reporters Network
  • Accompany small groups of journalists on reporting trips to rural Liberia
  • Work with jhr’s in-country Journalism Trainers to identify strategies to improve training
  • Involvement in curriculum development – draft and/or advise on human rights reporting curricula at Liberian universities
  • Create monthly blog postings and success stories for public engagement
  • Produce regular monthly reports providing feedback on the status and progression of the program
  • Playing a liaison role between jhr and the local media partner, the Liberia Media Center
Skills/Experiences/Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of and commitment to human rights, or a demonstrated interest in human rights, including commitment to gender equality

jhr travels to Africa with Editor of the Toronto Star

jhrs International Programs Director Rachel Pulfer recently spent three weeks traveling though Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the Editor of the Toronto Star, Michael Cooke. Cooke conducted three workshops in Ghana and four workshops in the DRC on topics such as freedom of the press, investigative journalism and good governance. His workshops were attended by three hundred journalists, journalism students, editors and publishers.

jhr to send 40 more young Canadians to Africa

In collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), jhr will be sending 40 interns to work with and learn from jhr’s media partners in Malawi and Ghana over the next two years. The internship program serves as a way to give Canadian youth work experience in developing countries. The first group of interns depart in early July, with placements in Star Radio, the Daily Times and Capital Radio in Malawi and Critical TV and the Daily Guide in Ghana.
