jhr Fellowships
Journalism Fellowships – jhr offers a limited number of fellowships each year to local journalists. Journalists are invited to submit applications on an issue they would like to cover in-depth.

The journalists must express how they feel covering this issue will positively contribute to local and/or national change. Successful candidates are provided with a stipend and ongoing mentorship from jhr trainers for the duration of the Fellowship.

Raymond Luneko
Subject: The Plight of Pygmies
Medium: Television
Considered among the oldest populations of Africa, standing no higher than 1.45 m (4 ft 10 inches), Pygmies are hunter and gathers that live in the rainforests of equatorial Africa. This televised documentary aims to sensitize the general public to the ongoing discrimination faced by Pygmies and bring about a push for this vanishing population’s human rights.

Subject: Children Accused Witchcraft
Medium: Radio
When the inexplicable occurs in a village, it is not uncommon for people to blame children, believed to be 'possessed', and practicing witchcraft. Ostracized from their communities, these children are forced out of their homes and into the streets. There are those who claim to be able to purge the child of these evil demons, often involving additional abuses. This radio program hopes to bring this issue to the public’s attention and put pressure on the government in an effort to stop these 'exorcisms.'

Subject: Education and Sanitation Systems in Kinshasa's Slums
Medium: Newspaper
Focusing on the difficult daily lives of those living in the sprawling slums of Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, this article will look at the basic needs that are not being met and the human rights abuses that are going unnoticed. With some of the lowest Human Development Indicators in the world, this feature will look at how the government is failing to provide infrastructure and sanitation for its people.

Subject: Victims of the International Criminal Court
Medium: Newspaper
Looking at the case of Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, a former rebel leader from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and his alleged use of child soldiers, tourture, rape and mutilation in the country’s ongoing conflict, this featured new story hopes to start public debate on the role of victims in the International Criminal Court.

Subject: Political Corruption in Sierra Leone

An investigative look at the alleged involvement of Sierra Leone’s Energy and Power Minister in awarding a fraudulent contract to Income Electrix, a Nigerian electrical engineering solutions provider for Africa.

Abu-Bakaar is a freelance reporter for Associated Press Television News, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, as well as an independent documentary filmmaker and producer. His latest film, Scrap Metal and the Agony of the Child, won jhr’s Investigative and Human Rights Report of the Year in Sierra Leone.

Subject: Mental health issues in Makeni, Sierra Leone
Medium: Radio
A three-part radio series examining attitudes and perceptions of mental illness in Sierra Leone. The series will take an in-depth look at the local belief that mental illness is associated with witchcraft, as well as the national government’s stance and the difficulties of day-to-day living for the mentally ill.

Anara Bangura is a reporter with Radio Mankneh, based in Makeni, Sierra Leone.

Subject: Prison Rights, Child Rights and Women's Rights
Medium: Newspaper
Three investigative stories centering around human right’s violations in Sierra Leone. The first feature will examine the abuses of accused persons in police custody and in prison, describing torture, deprivation of basic facilities, unlawful detention and overcrowding in prisons. The second article will take a closer look at child labour in mining communities. The final story will investigate the exploitation of women’s rights in rural communities and the impact of recently-passed gender laws.

Subject: Injustice Faced by Juveniles in Sierra Leone's legal System
Medium: Radio
Focusing on three major cities in Sierra Leone - Freetown, Kenema and Makeni - this program will explore the lack of social workers in the court system, the problems associated with rehabilitation schools, and the impact incarceration has on child prisoners.

Fofanah is a journalist with Radio Kalleone based in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Matthew A. Kanu
Subject: Compensation for War Veterans
Medium: Radio
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was set up to reveal past wrongdoings by the government and provide recommendations for recourse. This radio program will look specifically at the TRC's role in providing compensation for the several thousand amputees and war victims. Featuring interviews with amputees, local councils, civil society groups, the human rights commission, and government institutions, the radio program will examine the success or failure of the TRC thus far.

Matthew is a broadcaster, producer and reporter at Radio Maria in Makeni, Sierra Leone. In the past he has worked for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service and served as the Assistant Secretary General of Sierra Leone’s Association of Journalists.

Sarah Bomkapre Kamara
Subject: Prostitution, Barriers Faced by the Disabled and Music Piracy
Medium: Radio
Three radio features will be produced for Cotton Tree News Radio. The first will explore the life of a commercial sex worker, examining the government's efforts to make sure girls have access to education and skills training. The second program will investigate the obstacles to higher education faced by people with disabilities. The third program will focus on the effect of copyright piracy on Sierra Leone’s music industry.

Sarah is a producer and broadcaster with the radio station Cotton Tree News (CTN), located in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Students Holler Against Congo's Sexual Violence
This November 4th, 2011, university students across Canada are choosing to Stand Up and Shout about sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for 16 hours straight. Each hour is dedicated to 100 000 of the 1.6 million sexual violence victims in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To signify their participation, students will also sport blue lipstick. New Exchange Program launches between Sierra Leone and Ghana
jhr, in partnership with the Commonwealth Foundation, has recently launched an exchange program for Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean journalists. From May to December 2011 six journalists will visit Accra, Ghana and Freetown, Sierra Leone. They will discuss and share insights with fellow journalists, based in a different country, how to better cover elections.

Last July, Winston Daryoue gained rare access to the Firestone rubber plantation to produce a 30-minute radio documentary about the life of a rubber tapper at the company. The plantation has been accused of gross labour violations and environmental abuse in Liberia. The documentary was picked up by national media. Daryoue says he wants to dedicate his career to reporting on human rights abuses, with a focus on gender rights. "For too long, Liberia has had a history where women have been left behind," he says, "so there's a need for an institution that will give greater priority to women's issues."
